CLIMATIC ZONES/BELTS

The world may be divided into three major climatic zones , namely;

1. tropical climate zone
2. temperate climate zone
3 polar climate zone

Each climatic zone has its special characteristics or climatic conditions.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CLIMATE TYPES

The following climatic types exist in the tropical zone.
a. Equatorial
b. Tropical Monsoon
c. Savanna
d. Hot Desert
e. Tropical Marine

In the temperate zone the following exist
a. Temperate Monsoon
b. Temperate Grassland or Continal
c. Cool Temperate (Forest lands)
d. Tundra

In the Polar/Zone the climate is polar

Read for further information on the characteristics of these climates.

These climate types occur within earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere can be defined as the composition of the air above the earth. Not only does climate occur in the atmosphere but also weather. Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a particular time over a particular place. The condition of the atmosphere can be described in terms of the elements of weather such as precipitation, temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction and sunshine.

Climate on the other hand can be defined as the average condition of the atmosphere over a long period of time. There are three factors which determine the climate of a place. These are:

A. altitude - how high or low a place is above sea level
B. latitude - the location of a place (Grid address)
C. distance from the sea - how near or far a place is from the sea
